Hong Kong is Asia's physical gold hub, where loco-London bullion and CGSE-cleared metal meet strong regional demand. Because trade here is driven by physical flows rather than a deep paper market, the registered vault balance and the pace of eligible conversions matter more than headline open interest (OI).
Regional premiums over the international benchmark act as an early warning: when premiums widen alongside a falling coverage ratio, it suggests metal is being pulled east faster than vaults are being replenished. Sustained outflows can lift delivery pressure at the margin, even in a market that is normally well supplied.
